Empathy is the key to an outstanding Step 2 CS exam.

Showing empathy through the phone is often times challenging for students, but it is definitely possible with a few simple steps. Below I’ve outlined 3 tips that you can keep in mind to be more empathetic on your Step 2 CS phone case.

Tip 1. “I’m sorry to hear that” – As soon as the person on the phone tells you the reason for the phone call, show some empathy by telling them how sorry you are to hear about the child’s illness.

Tip 2. When the parent is concerned – At some point throughout the call the parent is going to show you some degree of concern. Take this opportunity to demonstrate some empathy so that they know you’re concerned for their child’s well-being.

Tip 3. Close with empathy – Right before you finish the phone call, take one last opportunity to show some empathy by letting the parent/guardian know that you’re going to do everything you can to help their child feel better.

Follow these tips on your next phone call and you’ll come across as more empathetic and caring!
